...I think the vintage samplers are rich in low end, and playback high frequency material as you hear it from the source. Where as the newer samplers are low end deficent, and brighten or "hypen" the high stuff. Thats why these new age Hip-Hop cats got to go through this 10 step process to get a punchy kick. All I do is chop a kick, sample it through the SP (E-MU SP-1200) with the gain set as high is it can without distorting, boost around 50-60hz, throw a dbx160(insert VU, X, etc) in there, and thats a wrap. I don't need to layer 7 kicks together or none of that. And why would you? Then you get phasing issues. Plus 7 kicks from seperate sources is just unrealistic. It's not like you have 7 drummers hitting different kick drums all at the same time!
Bottomline for me is that I use equipment that gets me the best sound possible with the least amount of effort. I find 12-bit samplers put you 10 steps ahead right off the bat. If others want to use the modern shit and struggle for hours to get "that sound" thats peace.. i'll have already moved onto to tracking and mixing by the time they get they're snare drum right.
Like I said initally, the S950 is this guys best choice. The 950 can do that distorted, supper muddy (sh-tty sound), or do the crystal clear (but still thick) sound...
