Macron:
I dont like how sounds most of modern electro, thats why i..m trying to use technology near-close to 80..s. I..m recording from analog mixer stereo pair straith to the studio tape recorder. Yes, i understand what i cant get that proper electro sound from 80..s in my home studio and with not-so-big budget, but i want to be closer to the sound of golden era of electro (first half of 80s) as much as possible.
Instead of TR-808 (1500$ is too high price for me) i..m using MPC-1000 (using as main sequencer and drum macine) + Jomox M-Base 01 (strictly kick synthesizer), but i cant find any info about what kind of hardware used for sound processing, mainly for beats in 80s.
I tried to process the kick with Lexicon MPX500 (as reverb) + low freqs cutted off after verb, i wanted to get this signature «breathing» in-ya-face kick sound (i dont have a proper compressor yet, thinking about building up my own SSL clone) typical for old skool electro and most of your tracks (like Girls, Kinky Nation, Planet E, You So Fine). At the end of it all i got the sound, but still missed there something. Please, can you share with me what and how kind of processing you did for drums on your tracks (Girls, Kinky Nation, Planet E, You So Fine), mainly for kicks and snares?
Egyptian Lover:
First of all you must buy a Roland TR- 808 at any price. Of is the foundation. You also need to know how to use the tape, speed, tones, how hot to record it. There is so much you must do. It's not easy. Then you must mix down to another tape and that will give you a good sound. (1.Есть смысл с переписыванием на другой мофон, кто нибуть так пробывал? Может он пошутил?)
Macron:
1. Big thanks about giving me the info about using tape, but still want to know how you processing drums(i mean FX and compressor hardware units), mainly kick and snare, how to make them to sound like in your earlier tracks?
2. Do you mean i must record my stuff to the multitrack tape recorder and then mix down everything to the stereo tape recorder, or is it ok how i do - all my sound going to analog mixer desk, then stereo pair out to stereo tape recorder and i must once again mix down this records to another stereo tape recorder?
“You also need to know how to use the tape, speed, tones, how hot to record it.”
3. What did you mean under the "tone" ?
4. What did you mean when you said to record "hot"? Is it means how loud to record or about natural tape compression/saturation effect?
Egyptian Lover:
It's all too much to teach by typing. Find a good older engineer to help you build your studio. He can align your machine with the right tones and tell you how hot to record. (2.Речь идёт о настройки подмагничивания и с каким уровнем писать на плёнку?)
Each sound must have it's own track (3.Речь идёт о мультитрековом мафоне?) and the FX can be whatever you want it to be that sounds good to you. I never used compressors back in the day. just the right FX.
Извиняюсь заранее если не туда запостил.
